This peer-reviewed, open-access study draws on four large datasets (over 3 million individuals across multiple countries and metropolitan regions) plus longitudinal and occupational data — and finds a robust statistical correlation between exposure to automation (robots / AI / workplace automation) and declines in religiosity. The findings hold even when controlling for wealth, demographic factors, and other forms of technology, suggesting that automation itself (not just economic or social change) may be a significant factor in modern religious decline.
• The authors argue that as automation becomes more widespread, many of the instrumental, existential, and practical functions traditionally served by religion (healing, social support, explaining uncertainty, meaning-making, community) become less necessary or are mediated by technology — which can lead to secularization.
• For faith leaders, clergy, chaplains, and ethicists: this study raises critical questions — how do we pastorally respond when technology begins to fill roles historically held by religious institutions? What does belonging, identity, and spiritual formation look like in automated contexts?
• For policymakers and technology designers: it underscores that technology adoption doesn’t exist in a moral or spiritual vacuum — the spread of automation can reshape belief, identity, and community.
